Letter of Intent

I am pursuing the Screen Arts program at Nova Scotia Community College to build a strong foundation for my future in the film industry. I want to create films that go beyond just cinematography and storytelling, work that carries meaning, and brings a part of myself back to life each time it's viewed.

This program stands out to me because I will be surrounded by others with goals similar to mine, and other individuals pursuing their own paths within the industry. An environment where I can actively create, learn and gain real experience. While I have not worked on a film set yet, my experience in forestry has given me transferable skills, including physical work, handling equipment, and working with a team.

I am committed to the continuous development of my skills as a filmmaker, and prepared to improve my creative and technical abilities through this program. I have already begun gaining insight into the film industry through completing the Film Industry Orientation course with International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees Local 849, in addition I am in the Directors Guild of Canada's Maritime Permittee Program. I have learnt about the professional standards and expectations of working on a set, and the jobs of each department.

I'm drawn to interpretation, and the idea that art doesn't need to be linear. In particular I want to create films that are left to be discovered by the viewer, letting the story be found rather than handed to you. A story of this kind allows for a more reflective and personal experience, where the audience is not guided through every moment, and the meaning is not forced, but discovered.

I'm hopeful to start learning at the Ivany campus in fall of 2026, looking forward to hearing from admissions.

Thank you for your consideration.
